Time is Precious

When I was a student, it was hard for me to understand why people still wore wrist watches. Every classroom has a clock on the wall, my laptop was usually at hand to show me the time, and in case I was out and about somewhere my cell phone was always there if I needed to quickly check just how late I was running. Now that I'm a proper grown-up, I've come to really love and appreciate watches! They are useful when you're literally trying to do a hundred things at once and can't remember where you set down your phone, if you're juggling a zillion items in your hands, if you need to surreptitiously check the time without being rude, or just as a cute wrist accessory!

My watch collection is small but each watch has been carefully chosen. Overall it looks like my preference is for pretty, feminine, and somewhat old-fashioned watches with a face that isn't too large or and a style that isn't too plain. All of my watches are gold tone, so in the future I'd like to add some rose gold and silver too.

First up is my Olivia Burton. My husband bought it for me as an anniversary present several years ago from ModCloth, after a helpful hint from me! ModCloth doesn't appear to currently carry Olivia Burton watches, but Nordstrom and Bloomingdale's do, as does Asos and of course the Olivia Burton site itself. My Olivia Burton watch is my largest, with a 30 millimeter watch face. It's got a greeny-grey color palette and the prettiest floral design! The leather wrist strap is very comfortable and while a little of the color has worn away on the edges of the strap, it really hasn't aged badly at all! This watch was the start of my collection and I wore it constantly. While this exact watch is no longer available, Olivia Burton has a TON of gorgeous watch designs that I browse from time to time because they're just so pretty. Many feature beautiful florals, butterflies, or even bunnies and other cute animals, but there are also plainer, more sober designs for sale. I wouldn't mind getting another one someday, but with so many lovely options to choose from I have to be very picky or I'd end up with a zillion of her watches (and a very sad bank account!)

My green watch was a Christmas gift from my parents. It's called the Delander watch and I saw it in the Metropolitan Museum gift catalog (it's still available!) The gorgeous ornate watch face was instant love for me, despite the fact that I don't wear a lot of green. I don't wear this one as much as it deserves to be worn because the green leather strap it came with is very stiff and uncomfortable. Compared to my lovely Olivia Burton, it's a pain to wear. However, I love the look of it so much that I'm not sorry to own it, and I hope one day to find a nicer strap to replace the original. This watch is a touch smaller than my Olivia Burton, coming in at 28 millimeters wide.

A Kate Spade Mini Polka Dot Metro watch was my third addition, and I bought it for myself from the Kate Spade website during a sale a couple years ago. The watch face is plain pale pink with little gold dots to mark the hours and the pink leather strap had gold polka dots. At 25 millimeters wide it is smaller than my other two. This is probably my most worn watch, despite the fact that it's the least fancy. It's very comfortable, the pink color is the perfect pink shade, and it almost always either matches my outfit or lies surreptitiously under a long sleeve without being bulky. The gold polka dots on the strap have worn away a bit on the underside of the watch where it rubs against my clothes more, but otherwise it's still in fantastic shape despite the heavy use. My positive experience with this watch is why the Kate Spade Holland Heart watch is on my wishlist! The Mini Metro watch is no longer is stock but Kate Spade has tons of cute new designs. Nordstrom, Zappos, Macy's, and Lord & Taylor are just a few other retailers who also carry Kate Spade watches.

My last watch (and arguably my very first) is a vintage watch inherited from my late grandmother. She gave it to me years ago and I immediately changed the broken strap for a new one but never wore it much because at the time I just didn't wear wristwatches. Sadly my grandmother passed away before I fully appreciated her gift, but I believe she knows how much it means to me now. It's a very elegant little watch with gorgeous roman numerals marking the hours and a lovely ticking sound. It doesn't have a battery, instead you must wind it up. As far as I know, when it's properly wound it keeps good time. The gold color (was it gold plated perhaps?) on the watch case is a bit worn through here and there, but I love it and I'll treasure it forever.
